Investigating the Demand for Programming Blogs

I run a programming blog, and while it’s partly because it’s newly created, there’s very little traffic despite having a decent number of articles. So I investigated how much search demand there is for programming-related search queries.

Verification Method

View search volume using AdWords Keyword Planner.

Programming Language Keywords

ruby python php javascript java c c# c++

  • In Japanese

In Japanese, the search volume is highest in the order: ruby, python, php, javascript, java, c, c#, c++.

  • In English

In English, the search volume is highest in the order: javascript, java, python, c#, php, c++, ruby, c.

I ran the keywords “ubuntu, bash, ubuntu16.04, linux, ubuntu install” through the keyword planner.

  • In Japan (region==Japan)

The search volume is highest in the order: ubuntu, linux, bash, ubuntu16.04, ubuntu install.

  • In English

There seems to be about a 100x difference.

Conclusion

Programming has quite low demand (or rather, it’s for geeks and very deep), making it a niche content. Therefore, traffic inevitably becomes low.

  • Countermeasures

Either do typical SEO by increasing word count, or write articles in English. It might be worth considering writing articles in English in the future.

However, I still think it’s necessary to have a medium for disseminating information in Japanese for the sake of Japan.
